The selection of muzzles on the market is very large.

Choosing the right muzzle is crucial for your dog to adapt quickly and easily to it, or for them to reject it, turning the whole process into a painful experience for both of you. The correct size and fit are essential. Price should be a secondary consideration, as a muzzle is usually a one-time purchase. But which muzzle is the right one? First, it's important to understand what's available. We'll introduce you to the different types of muzzles.

The muzzle loop

A muzzle loop is not a muzzle! It does not prevent biting. The dog cannot open its mouth with it on. Therefore, the dog cannot pant or drink. This is a matter of animal welfare and can quickly become dangerous, leading to overheating. The question of which muzzle to use is therefore irrelevant.

The plastic muzzle

There are many models of plastic muzzles available. It's important to pay particular attention to high-quality workmanship. Lower-quality models can break easily in cold weather or under excessive force. Offering treats can be difficult with some models. However, the advantages of plastic muzzles are obvious: their generally light weight and ease of cleaning.

The wire muzzle

Wire muzzles or metal muzzles appear frightening to many people. They are usually heavy and become icy cold in winter. However, their high stability is a major advantage, reliably preventing biting. This stability is also a disadvantage, as it increases the risk of other injuries, such as bruising. Giving treats is generally possible with these muzzles.

The leather muzzle

Leather dog muzzles are lightweight and, at least initially, comfortable to wear. However, many dogs are bothered by the smell of leather or the tanning agents. It is also nearly impossible to keep a leather muzzle hygienic. Over time, it loses its shape, becomes stiff and brittle, and therefore uncomfortable for the dog.

The BioThane® muzzle

The material BioThane® It is lightweight, mold-resistant, robust and easy to clean. BUMAS is the first manufacturer that Muzzles Made from this material to measure. To reduce the fear associated with a muzzle, there are BUMAS Available in bright and cheerful color combinations. The material offers a high level of comfort for the dog. Treats and even spreading liverwurst on the skin to help the dog get used to it are of course possible.

Finally, I would like to emphasize once again the importance of proper and positive habituation of the muzzle It's important to note that the muzzle and proper muzzle training are key to success. There's nothing wrong with gradually introducing your dog to a muzzle from puppyhood. If this happens, wearing a muzzle won't be a big deal for the adult dog. Wearing a well-fitting muzzle is more comparable to wearing glasses for us humans.
