Measuring Instructions for Your Custom Harness

How to measure your dog for a BUMAS harness

You will need: A tape measure, possibly a piece of paper and a pen, and of course, treats for your patient dog. You can also have your phone ready and take photos of your measurements. We'd love to see your measurement photos and give you feedback! If you don't have a tape measure, use a string or a charging cable and then measure the length with a ruler or tape measure.

If you already have a well-fitting harness, you can also measure that harness. Feel free to send us photos of the measurements if you are unsure.

And don't worry – our 100% fit guarantee allows you to have any measuring errors corrected free of charge.

Front Circumference:
Measure the neck circumference from the breastbone over the shoulder blades, as indicated by the pink marking in our graphic. You must measure significantly lower than for a collar. Note down this measurement for your order.

Rear Circumference:
Measure the chest circumference in the middle of the rib cage, as indicated by the green marking in our graphic. For large dogs, this is about a hand's width behind the front legs; for small dogs, it's about 2-3 fingers' width behind the front legs. For dogs with very long backs, please move the measurement further back to the middle of the rib cage accordingly. Note down this measurement for your order.

Top Strap:
Start between the shoulder blades and measure to the middle of the rib cage, where you just measured the chest circumference. This is shown by the blue marking in our graphic. Note down this measurement for your order.

Bottom Strap:
Start at the breastbone, guide the tape measure between the front legs to the middle of the rib cage, where you measured the chest circumference. This is shown by the red marking in our graphic. Note down this measurement for your order.

Additional Tips:
Measurements should always be taken on a standing dog.

  • Individual Measurement: Measurements can vary depending on the breed and size of the dog, so individual measurement is important.

  • Help with Measuring: If you are unsure, feel free to send us your measurement photos, or a photo of your dog standing in profile. We will gladly check your photos at office@bumas.at and give you feedback, or make markings on your photo to show you exactly where to measure.
