The Labrador Retriever

Daniel

Friendly and compassionate Companion

Due to his shoulder height, the Labrador belongs neither to the smallnor to the medium-sizeddog breeds. Just like the Golden Retriever and the Bernese Mountain Dog, he already belongs to the large dog breeds. The Labrador is named after the Labrador Peninsula. This is located on the east coast of Canada. In any case, his ancestors come from this area, like the Newfoundland and the Landseer. Around 1800, the Labrador was distinguished from the Newfoundland. He was then bred in England during the 19th century. The term “Labrador Retriever” was first used in 1870. It describes the distinct retrieving and hunting instincts of this breed. The Labrador is described as a large, strong dog, with a typically broad skull, “otter tail” and densely coated with fur. His job back then was to help in hunting.

The Labrador Retriever is a dog breed recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale. He is classified in group 8, i.e. retriever/flushing dogs/water dogs. Today, the Labrador is one of the most popular dog breeds and is common all over the world.

Traits and Characteristics of the Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever is a friendly and intelligent dog. He is easy-going, good-natured and open-minded. Although his will to work is very pronounced, he is hardly suitable as a guard dog. Since he meets strangers, as well as other dogs, mostly without aggression.

But the Labrador is extremely obedient and can be trained for many other things. Because he shows a pronounced “will to please”-behavior. The Labrador Retriever is very intelligent and learns signals and tricks fast and with joy. He also loves to go for long walks, he doesn’t care about the weather. If there is also a swimming possibility for him on the way, the Labbi is truly in his element.

Therefore, the Labrador Retriever is particularly ideal for active people. Since he is very people-oriented, he also feels good in a family. He is therefore considered as THE family dog par excellence and loves social contact. Nevertheless, of course, a Labrador Retriever must be well educated. He should definitely know the basic signals and be able to follow them.

It is also good to know that Labrador Retrievers are very often “eating machines”. The Labbi eats almost everything and is not picky. Unfortunately, this can be dangerous. You should really be careful that the Labrador does not get overweight. Because this is very unhealthy, as it is with humans, it affects organs and joints. In addition, there is a risk that the Labrador gets something between his teeth that is not good for him. For example, spoiled food, or even poison baits. To prevent this, you should do anti-bait training and also muzzle training with your Labrador. So he does not learn to swallow everything immediately, and he can not do that at all when wearing a muzzle.

Specifics buying a muzzle for the Labrador Retriever

For Large and breedswith even larger appetites, like the Labrador Retriever, it is often difficult to find the right muzzle. Muzzles off the shelf can often be uncomfortable for your pup if they don’t fit exactly on the snout.

An individually made muzzle from BUMAS is comfortable to wear for your Labrador Retriever. The BioThane® material is soft and flexible, so it won’t press on your dog’s nose. A comfortable fit increases the acceptance enormously. A BUMAS muzzle gives your pup protection and safety.
