The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) classifies the Boston Terrier as a mastiff-type dog and places it in FCI Group 9, which contains a total of 26 companion and toy dogs.
Character traits and personality characteristics of the Boston Terrier
The Boston Terrier is a very lively dog who loves exploring his surroundings and meeting people, and is constantly on the go. Plenty of exercise is therefore the best way to satisfy his need for activity. He is absolutely enthusiastic about agility training and also needs mental stimulation. Boston Terriers love to romp around in warmer temperatures, as their short coat makes them sensitive to the elements. A well-fitting dog coat is recommended in winter, and a walk in a shady forest or park is ideal in summer.
Due to its square head shape and angular jaw, the Boston Terrier is prone to dental problems, which you can counteract with suitable chew toys. Despite its high energy level, its short nose means it has more difficulty breathing than other breeds, similar to the Pug or French Bulldog. Therefore, you shouldn't overdo it with roughhousing and simply pay attention when your dog needs a break.
Because of their enormous temperament, Boston Terriers can sometimes be difficult to control, loving but consistent training is very important. All dogs need training and should know and be able to obey basic commands.
