Correct measurement: BUMAS muzzle

In 3 steps to the perfect fitting muzzle

You’ll need: one or two tailor’s measuring tapes, paper clips, a piece of paper and a pencil, and of course treats for your patient dog.

1. Snout circumference

Place the measuring tape around the dog’s snout and fix it with the paper clip. Do not place the measuring tape too close to the eyes, make the measurement about 1 – 1.50cm in front of the eyes. The measuring tape should run straight down from the bridge of the nose to the lips. Do not pull it towards the throat or tip of the nose. The lips should not be squeezed, nor should there be any slack. As can be seen in the sample pics below.

Note the snout circumference in cm, do NOT add anything extra, the room for panting will be asked later!

Take your measuring photo in the side profile. Please make sure that the complete head of the dog is to be seen, and you can read the numbers on the measuring tape. Upload your measurement photo later during the ordering process!

You own a Bull Terrier? Then please measure the snout circumference even further in front of the eyes, as can be seen in the photo.

2. Snout length

Long snout: Place the measuring tape approx. 1 – 1.50cm in front of the corners of the eyes at the bridge of the nose. Measure to the outermost point of the nose tip.

ATTENTION: Please be really careful not to place the measuring tape too close to the eyes, or even between the eyes.

You own a Bull Terrier? Then please start the length measurement approx. in the middle of the snout, as it can be seen in the photo.

Note the snout length in cm, please add NOTHING extra, the leeway in front of the snout is calculated by our support team!

Take your measurment photo vertically and straight above the snout. Please make sure that the complete head of the dog is to be seen, and you can read the numbers on the measuring tape. Upload your measurement photo later during the ordering process hoch!

Flat snout: underbite or overbite: Place the measuring tape SIDELY BEFORE the corner of the eye. Measure to the furthest point of the lips or tip of the nose, whichever is longer on your dog. As can be seen in the sample pics and the graphic below.

ATTENTION: Please be really careful not to place the measuring tape too close to the eye.

3. Pant circumference

Go on with the pant control!

It is really important to us that your dog can pant and drink properly when wearing the BUMAS muzzle. Incidentally, your dog will drink inside the muzzle. The water flows through the gaps between the straps and your dog can drink inside.

Please let us know the exact size of the pant measure, which is also the production size for your BUMAS muzzle.

How to find out the correct pant measurement?

1. Method: Make a measuring tape loop with a paper clip and measure the open muzzle while panting. Place the tape measure around the panting, open snout. The tape measure should run straight down from the bridge of the nose to the lips. Please do not squeeze the lips. There should also be no slack.

2. Method If it is not possible, or very difficult, to take the panting measurement from your dog, calculate the panting measurement. Calculate between 30 - 40% of the closed snout circumference + the closed snout circumference:

Example 30% with 25cm circumference closed: 2,5 x 3 = 7,50 + 25 = 32,50cm

Example 40% with 25cm circumference closed: 2,5 x 4 = 10 + 25 = 35cm

Please think of your dog, how wide he pants at most, which value suits him. It is recommended that you use the calculated value to form another measuring tape loop and hang it around your dog's snout. This way you can see what it will look like.

ATTENTION: We are always talking about the future interior measurements of your BUMAS muzzle.

How to get our dog panting

- With your favorite activity e.g. playing ball, frisbee or similar.

- Perhaps a drive in a heated car?

- Let your dog hold an object in his/her mouth to simulate panting.

Is targeted muzzle training really that important?

Every dog should be able to pant and drink properly when wearing the BUMAS muzzle. A BUMAS muzzle should be comfortable for the dog to wear in all situations, weathers and conditions. The correct size and the soft, flexible BioThane® material make a BUMAS muzzle absolutely comfortable for the dog to wear. The muzzle should sit neither too tightly nor too loosely on the dog's snout, and a BUMAS muzzle can be perfectly adjusted in this respect. All this increases the acceptance of a muzzle enormously.

Nevertheless, targeted and positive muzzle training is essential! Even for dogs that are already familiar with wearing muzzles, they still have to get used to the new one. Positive reinforcement training is training in which the dog associates what he has learned with a positive experience. So if the BUMAS muzzle is only used as a liverwurst, cheese spread and/or sausage dispenser for the first two to three weeks, for example, your dog will learn that every time he puts his snout in the BUMAS muzzle, something really great happens. This should be practiced every day, give your dog time and be patient. Your dog will then always be happy when the BUMAS muzzle appears. We wish you lots of fun with this!
